The face mask market is projected to grow from USD 737 million in 2019 to USD 22,143 million in 2021 and then reduce to USD 3,021 million by 2025. The projected CAGRs for these periods are 448.1% between 2019 to 2021 and an overall CAGR of -48.9% from 2020 to 2025. The primary reasons driving the growth of the face mask market include the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in consumer awareness pertaining to the importance of face masks, and the surge in social media marketing to encourage a positive attitude towards wearing masks.
COVID-19 Impact on the Global Face mask Market
The pandemic is estimated to have a huge positive impact pandemic has positive impact on the global face mask market. This is mainly because of the increasing demand for face masks, as they prevent or slow down the transmission of life-threatening COVID-19 infections. Also, face masks have been employed as a public and personal health control measure against the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Their use is intended as personal protection against infection and as source control to limit transmission of the virus in a community or healthcare setting. The various impacts of COVID-19 are as follows:
- According to the World Health Organization, mask production needs to be increased by 40% to meet global demand. As the pandemic has spread to over 213 countries, governments across the world are restricting exports of masks to fulfill domestic demand through increased production. This has resulted in shortages in countries that depend on imports. Thus, to meet the rising demand for masks, many companies worldwide are making efforts to increase the production of face masks.
- As of early May 2020, 88% of the world's population lived in countries that recommended or mandated the use of masks in public; more than 75 countries had mandated the use of masks.
Face mask Market Dynamics
Driver: Surge in social media marketing
To encourage a positive attitude towards wearing masks in the community in order to prevent the transmission of the novel coronavirus, many social media platforms have rolled out campaigns for promoting the use of face masks. According to the CEO of Facebook, his company is working with the World Health Organization (WHO), to which it is providing free advertising space to support the fight against COVID-19. For instance, the company has put alerts at the top of the social media feeds of Facebook and Instagram to remind users to wear face coverings and find more prevention tips from the US CDC using the COVID-19 Information Center.
Restraint: Volatility in raw material prices
The major restraint to the growth of the face mask market are the volatile raw material prices. Oil and metal are the main raw materials required for the manufacture of the nonwoven materials, metal strips, and ear loops needed for face masks. Fluctuating commodity prices have a tremendous impact on the cash flows and earnings of companies in that ecosystem. This is expected to add to the manufacturing cost of face masks, hence a restraint to the face mask market.
Opportunity: Growing healthcare industry in emerging economies
Emerging economies such as India, Brazil, China, and South Africa provide significant opportunities for players in the face mask market. The need for improved healthcare services in these economies is mainly driven by the rapidly increasing aging population, high patient volumes, growing per capita income, and rising awareness. This has provided the manufacturers with significant growth opportunities.
Challenge: Volatility in production
Polypropylene (PP) is a polymer derived from oil that is one of the most commonly used nonwoven materials for face masks. PP electret melt-blown nonwoven is a specialized fabric produced by a limited number of companies globally due to the high initial investment required in heavy machinery, such as hoppers, extruders, and melt spinning systems. These factors pose a challenge to the new entrants in entering into the face mask market.
The other face masks, in by type segment of the global face mask market is projected to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period.
The other face mask segment of the face mask market includes dust, fashion, and pitta masks. Pitta masks are extensively used in Japan, followed by China, India, and the US, as a preventive measure against polluted air. The other face masks are projected to witness robust growth during the forecast period, owing to the increasing use of fashion masks as a preventive measure during the COVID-19 crisis.
Reusable face masks are projected to witness robust growth in by nature segment of the face mask market type in terms of value during the forecast period.
The reusable face masks by nature segment is projected to record robust growth in the global face mask market during the forecast period. The high growth of the reusable face mask segment is majorly attributed to their low cost and the huge shortage of disposable face mask, globally.
The Industrial & Institutional end-use segment is estimated to witness promising growth in the face mask market.
The face masks used in the industrial & institutional end use segment are designed to prevent the inhalation of airborne particles commonly associated with environments where grinding, sanding, sweeping, and other dusty operations occur in these industries. These factors are driving the demand for a face mask in the industrial & institutional end-use segment.
North America is projected to witness significant growth in the global face mask market during the forecast period.
North America is projected to witness promising growth in the face mask market during the forecast period. Growth in this market is majorly driven by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, growing demand for healthcare services (owing to an anticipated surge in the geriatric population in the coming years and the subsequent increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases), and the need for infection control to minimize the prevalence of Health Associated Infections (HAIs).
